Renowned California brewery Firestone Walker’s Anniversary Ale is among the more anticipated beer releases on the craft beer calendar. Each year, they work with a group of local winemakers who break off into teams and create blends of other barrel-aged Firestone Walker beers released that year. After blending, everyone tastes them all, casts their vote for their favorite, and, eventually, a winner is named and then released as that year’s Anniversary Ale. Details were announced today about this year’s, Firestone Walker 21, which features a blend of five different beers: It consists of 42 percent Velvet Merkin (an oatmeal stout), 18 percent Parabola (an imperial stout), 17 percent Stickee Monkee (a Central Coast quad), 14 percent Bravo (and imperial brown ale), and 9 percent Helldorado (a blonde barleywine). It’s hard to pinpoint exactly what it’ll taste like, but you can certainly count on it being substantial and complex. Firestone’s barrel program is among the best in the business, offering far more than the same old cream soda flavors you’re used to from lesser barrels and lesser breweries. Expect tons of toasted coconut, licorice, and some nice, dark cocoa powder. It’ll be released in 12oz bottles starting next week, with a suggested price tag of $12.99, which seems like a whole lot, but is actually entirely reasonable.
