Of the hundreds—possibly thousands—of goals scored around the world in professional soccer over the past year, a few stand above the rest. Especially the one Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud scored against Crystal Palace in January. Giroud took home the Puskás Award at the the Best FIFA Football Awards for the best professional soccer goal of the year, beating out Oscarine Masuluke from South Africa and Deyna Castellanos of Venezuela. Giroud’s shot on goal itself was fantastic, but the entire play was a thing of beauty. The Arsenal offense took the ball from end to end with four beautiful touch passes before sending a cross from the top of the box to Giroud, who guided the ball into the net with a perfectly timed scorpion kick:

Masuluke’s goal for Baroka F.C. South Africa’s Premier Soccer League had a pretty strong case to win the award—especially considering Masuluke is a goalie. After a deflection from a shot, Masuluke pulled off a bicycle kick that was just out of reach of the opposing keeper:

The third-place goal from Castellanos came in the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, and came from a shot taken right at the kickoff:
