They have since been restored after an investigation by The Japan Canoe Federation. Komatsu vehemently denied ever taking the muscle-building aid methandienone after he tested positive for it. Suzuki eventually admitted to giving his main competitor the drug because he felt he needed Komatsu out of the competition for a chance at winning. The Japanese Anti-Doping Agency handed down the eight-year ban to Suzuki, which will keep him out of the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. Komatsu, however, is considered a favorite to represent.
