There’s being busy, and then there’s being Donald Glover busy. It’s only the first week of May, and the 34-year-old polymath seems to have accomplished more in the past seven days than some people get done in an entire career. Over the course of the past weekend, his name was trending on virtually every social media platform after premiering new music, a new music video, as well as hosting and performing as the musical guest on Saturday Night Live. And it’s worth mentioning that the ticket presales for his next movie, Solo: A Star Wars Story, are already breaking box office records. Just to recap, here is a look at Glover’s past week… Saturday Night Live
Not only did Glover play host for this week’s star-studded episode of Saturday Night Live, acting in virtually every sketch to rave reviews, but he also was the musical guest, performing as his alias Childish Gambino. Talk about pulling double duty. His monologue, which you can watch above, was fire, and he even revealed that he had auditioned for the iconic improv program twice, getting rejected both times. Sweet vindication. “This Is America”
Shortly after Childish Gambino performed “This Is America” on SNL, the music video hit the Internet and quickly became the most-talked piece of content on the web. Shot by Hiro Murai, a director who also works on Glover’s show Atlanta, the video is a polarizing (and graphic) commentary on gun violence in America today. Since being posted, the video has racked up millions of views, and spawned countless think pieces.
Solo: A Star Wars Story
This week Disney Pictures dropped a new featurette for Solo: A Star Wars Story, the highly anticipated Star Wars prequel that gets released May 24. The movie is based around the young Han Solo, as played by Alden Ehrenreich, but if what we have seen so far is any indication, Donald Glover’s Lando Calrissian will be a scene-stealer. Atlanta
While Glover was in New York City rehearsing for his SNL gig, the latest episode from the Emmy- and Golden Globe-winning series he created aired on FX. Glover also directed this week’s episode, titled “FUBU”, making it the fourth one he’s directed, because just starring in the show isn’t enough work on its own.
