Skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing already will be included as medal sports in the 2020 Olympics, and this latest action makes it likely that the sports will also be included in the 2024 Games. Breaking was previously added to the Youth Olympic Games Buenos Aires 2018 as a medal event, and now the sport is closer to an official debut in a major Olympic Games. “The four sports that Paris has proposed are all totally in line with Olympic Agenda 2020 because they contribute to making the programme more gender balanced and more urban, and offer the opportunity to connect with the younger generation,” said IOC President Thomas Bach in a released statement. “The proposed sports are in line with these principles and enhance Paris 2024’s overall dynamic Games concept, which focuses on inclusivity, inspiring a new audience and hosting socially responsible Games.”

Back in August 2016, the IOC announced that a slew of new sports would be added for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, including baseball, softball, skateboarding, surfing, karate, and sport climbing. While baseball and softball previously have been Olympic sports, the rest are brand-new additions to the lineup. The final decisions on adding the sports to the 2024 Games will be made in December 2020. By provisionally adding these sports to the 2024 lineup, the Olympic Programme Commission will “continue its analysis and observation” of the competitions, including “joint official observations at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 with Paris 2024 and the Olympic Programme Commission,” according to the IOC.
