Chris Claridge, head of NZ’s industry body, Potatoes New Zealand said the rain hadn’t stopped since March and that it was “simply not good.” He also referred to the potato as a living entitiy that needed to breathe. All the rain water is drowning the poor potatoes.  “Potatoes are actually alive  — they need to breathe. And so effectively they drown, and then they start to rot… because they’re submerged in water,” he said. With the potential for the chip shortage to last throughout New Zealand’s summer season, people are starting to freak out on social media and also feel for the chipless folks of NZ. Rough times could be ahead for warm-weather get togethers.

Re: NZ #chipocalypse. Yes, there’s a potato shortage. But before anyone suggests them, kale chips are an abomination. — Lachlan Forsyth (@LachlanForsyth) October 15, 2017
