Anthony Bourdain’s Best Advice

“As NASA searches for life on Mars, we lose the life of beloved Anthony Bourdain on Earth,” wrote astrophysicist and host Neil deGrasse Tyson. “Implicit and explicit reminders of how precious life is, anywhere in the universe.”

Former President Barack Obama also shared a photo of himself with Bourdain, taken during an episode of Parts Unknown. “‘Low plastic stool, cheap but delicious noodles, cold Hanoi beer.’ This is how I’ll remember Tony,” President Obama wrote. “He taught us about food—but more importantly, about its ability to bring us together. To make us a little less afraid of the unknown. We’ll miss him.”

Anthony was my best friend. An exceptional human being, so inspiring & generous. One of the great storytellers who connected w so many. I pray he is at peace from the bottom of my heart. My love & prayers are also w his family, friends and loved ones. pic.twitter.com/LbIeZK14ia

“I should’ve died in my twenties. I became successful in my forties. I became a dad in my fifties. I feel like I’ve stolen a car — a really nice car — and I keep looking in the rear view mirror for flashing lights. But there’s been nothing yet.” Anthony Bourdain. +++ I get this quote. Deeply. I don’t know the depths of his issues but I woke up early this morning to read a friend’s list of gratitude and this popped up and I thought to myself there is nothing we should be doing in this life, given the choice, that doesn’t lend to giving, community, a sense of spiritual awe, self sustaining survival for your community and colorizing a day (and maybe telling a really good fucking joke). I feel for him and his family so much. I feel life wildly today. #ripanthonybordain A post shared by Josh Brolin (@joshbrolin) on Jun 8, 2018 at 7:43am PDT

This has been a year of great loss. I have lost too many dear friends and colleagues to suicide, several in the past two months. I’m gutted. As an industry we can do better. We must do better. We must love harder, stronger, deeper. For each other. We all have our shitwalk, our battles, our burdens, no free rides. It’s time we stop allowing our loved ones to believe suicide is their only answer. If you or someone you know is feeling despair, there is help. Please, if you’re a chef, put this number in your kitchen, put it in your phone, share it with your team, your friends, your family. It’s time to fucking throw away the shame and judgement of mental illness. We are one people. It’s safe to say that for better or worse I and many other cooks of my generations would not be in this industry were it not for Bourdain. I sure wish I could have shared a beer with him some day.https://t.co/Hrs7F3vXDo

Anthony was a major MeToo supporter. He strongly defended our rights; he spoke up publicly for us. He was that vital male partner. I am humbled and forever grateful that one of his last major projects was believing in and becoming EP of my recent CNN series on the lives of women.

His wisdom, his insight, his humor, his compassion, his staunch resistance to the inauthentic and support of all that resonates from the heart, and his passion for life that he shared with the us….Its difficult to process a world without Anthony Bourdain.

Today’s a day of extreme sadness for us here at Xi’an Famous Foods. I’ve lost a dear friend today, and we mourn with the rest of the world. This man Anthony Bourdain was a giant in his field. He introduced many of us who were not into the culinary arts to the joys and pain of the kitchen. We both worked in NYC clubs back in the day and I was one of the final guests on his first show, No Reservations. He came to see the real Brooklyn. When I was in Rome I would tweet him for restaurant recommendations and he would give us great ones. Bourdain’s writing inspired me to tell my story. It’s bittersweet that I am in Paris and woke up to the news of him passing in Paris. I feel like I should have sensed his presence and found him. Rest In Peace Tony Bourdain. A piece of my heart is truly broken this morning. And the irony, the sad cruel irony is that the last year he’d never been happier. The rest of my heart aches for the 3 amazing women he left behind. Tony was a symphony. I wish everyone could have seen all of him. A true friend.

Im so angry this morning. Life is fucking hard and crazy and Tony I love you. Im wearing your boots that I never wore because they were yours, and going to work. Everyone should hug some extra people today. My heart is heavy. https://t.co/2lFmz1UvWK pic.twitter.com/62Qcjwo33f

Legendary trailblazer Anthony Bourdain was not only a television host, an author, and a chef. He was our tour guide to the farthest corners of the world, the deepest parts of our souls. He took us there via a bowl of noodles or a platter of roast goat, and helped the world realize the social, political, and cultural value of food. While he was a James Beard Award winner, he was also one of our most outspoken critics. We honor him for his great work, which challenged all of us to ask hard questions and held us accountable for finding meaning in food, respecting the people who prepare it, and making change in the world. He will be deeply missed. The suicide of Anthony Bourdain is a stark reminder of depression and mental illness in our society, and within the culinary community. If a life can be measured by the number of other lives it inspired, enlightened, enraged, delighted, provoked, instructed, touched, and ultimately devastated…Anthony Bourdain’s sits atop the list. Beyond stunned. Hug someone you love today.
