In the Golden State, pumping gas could soon be a thing of the past. Democratic California Assembly member Phil Ting is going to introduce a bill that would make the state only recognize “clean” cars by 2040, according to Bloomberg. Vehicles in the state would have to emit no carbon dioxide, meaning drivers would have to switch to cars that are powered by electric batteries or hydrogen fuel cells. “Until you set a deadline, nothing gets done,” Ting said in an interview. “It’s responsible for us to set a deadline 23 years in advance.” He will introduce the bill next month during the next legislative session. This would be a huge step in reaching the state’s goal of slicing emissions by 80% from the the levels they were at in 1990, by 2050.
