Summer’s here, and the time is right — for ditching that stifling blazer for a dapper look with an airier feel. Whether you can get away with a vest (some dandies still use the term waistcoat) at work is up to you, but if you’re looking to make a splash at parties and other summer events, this look can definitely be pulled off without raising eyebrows. Given the right combination of clothing and accessories, you might even look sharper than those guys in their full suits. You don’t necessarily have to match your vest and pants, either; in fact, we recommend playing with the color and pattern combinations to highlight each piece. The right tie can subtly pull it all together without being too perfectly matched. But please, avoid wearing a white shirt with a solid, dark vest; you don’t want to be mistaken for a waiter. Not that there’s anything wrong with waiters! But you don’t want people to start giving you drink orders, do you? Here are four summer vests that take blazer-less cool to the next level.
Knickerbocker Mfg. Co.
Knickerbocker Mfg. Co. Jack’s Vest Launched in 2013, New York–based Knickerbocker Manufacturing Company combines traditional American manufacturing with Millennial idealism. Their Jack’s Vest in khaki is made from super-breathable cotton twill (woven in the U.S.) with a looser fit, making it perfect for hot days. It’s $165 at Spring.
Brooks Brothers
Brooks Brothers Irish Linen Vest Considering it’s the oldest men’s clothier in the U.S., Brooks Bros. should know a thing or two about vests. This imported five-button vest in summer-friendly Irish linen comes in a cream colorway that has garden party written all over it. It also happens to be on sale for $119, marked down from $198.
Tagliatore
Tagliatore Checked Vest Tagliatore is a third-generation Italian menswear company that combines old-school Italian craftsmanship and modern styling. This cotton-linen blend checked vest features a notch lapel in a five-button design with blue and gray stripes on the back. It’s $177 at Farfetch.
Suit Supply
Suitsupply Brown Waistcoat Double-breasted, with a crossing shawl collar in a bold brown check? That should get you noticed. With 6-on-2 buttons, it’s made from a silk-linen-cotton blend in a slim fit for $189.
