Braun’s watches are stylish, affordable, and really good at keeping time. And since their introduction in the 1970s, they’ve been the standard bearer for a the kind of spare simplicity that helps them stand apart from the tricked out watches on the market today. Many of Braun’s timepieces lack complications in an age when smartphones (and smart watches) can do everything from tell you your heart rate to respond to your text messages. They stand in direct contrast what most watch collectors stock up on over the course of a lifetime: no date function, chronometer, lunar cycle — all things that are impressive, to be sure, but perhaps not necessary for day to day life. The lack of “stuff” makes these watches visually uncluttered, and therefore more eye catching.

Our current favorite is a product of a collaboration between Braun and the design site Dezeen. And while it deep blue coloring is a bold departure from the stark black, white, and stainless steel models the company has produced over the years, the basic shape and dial layout isn’t a new design. Braun for Dezeen actually joins a collection of reissued watches that are, “based on original designs created by German industrial designers Dieter Rams and Dietrich Lubs for Braun in the 1970s.” The portfolio of timepieces is mostly monochromatic, with subtle numbering on the dial and typically no more than one complication. So if this shade of blue isn’t your color, we recommend checking out some of Braun’s other timepieces, like this stainless steel beauty. Like the Dezeen partnership, it has a quartz movement and is water resistant to 5 ATM. We wouldn’t argue that the Dezeen model is an heirloom piece (it goes for just $220), but the limited edition release of 250 watches adds an air of exclusivity to what is otherwise an eye-catching and solidly built watch.
