The former San Diegan, who now lives in Salida, Colorado, created a series of river surfing boards this year; the iSk8 is the inflatable model. Before you hardened ocean types disregard it as an inflatable gimmick, take another look. It’s ultra stiff, which creates surprising control on any type of river wave. That’s thanks to the company’s propriety rail system: Parabolic Reinforced Rails or PBR, an acronym that isn’t an accident if you know river folks’ affinity for cheap beer. Those reinforced rails allow you to pump the board without it flopping around. While you might not make rail-to-rail carves like you would with a traditional board, you will have enough control to make turns on any kind of river wave. The board comes with a thruster setup featuring Click Fins, where the skegs simply lock in place by pushing them forward. It also has a deck pad and deflates down to a tight little package that weighs less than 10 pounds.
