Dutch BMX rider and Olympic silver medalist Jelle van Gorkom is in a coma after a training accident earlier this week, according to The Royal Dutch Union. Gorkom crashed at the start of a practice run at the bottom of a hill. He suffered a fracture to the face, broken ribs, plus damage to the liver, kidney, and spleen.

The incident happened at the National Sports Centre Papendal in Arnhem. Jachem Schellens, the director of the Sports Centre, said in a translated statement, “It is a terrible accident and at the moment we are mainly with our thoughts at Jelle van Gorkom, his girlfriend, and his family and we wish them all the strength in the coming period.” This is the second coma of Gorkom’s career, according to Sports Illustrated. The first caused him to miss competing in the 2012 London Olympics. He won the silver medal at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
