In Kansas, some are sad and others relieved that Angus the wire-haired vizsla won’t be allowed to run for governor, The Hutchinson News reports. But everyone’s mostly confused about the loophole that made it possible for Angus’s human, Terran Woolley, to enter the three-year-old pup in the state’s gubernatorial race and set up a campaign committee in the first place. Turns out there aren’t any requirements delineating who can and can’t run for governor in Kansas—as evidenced by the six teenagers who recently announced their bids. In light of this, Republican state Rep. Blake Carpenter introduced a bill that would require candidates be at least 18 years old and state residents for at least four years (and prevent dogs, cats, and inmates from being able to run). It passed a House committee, the Kansas City Star reported, but won’t go into effect until January of next year. Anyway, back to Angus. Woolley caught wind of these teenagers, so he investigated Angus’ eligibility, posting this photo and statement:
But Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach’s office was quick to squash Angus’s candidacy. “I feel that maybe the secretary of state is scared of facing him in the primary or in the general election, I guess, since Angus is a Democrat,” Woolley told The Kansas City Star with a laugh.
