Two big announcements in the last couple of weeks have reminded us why Buffalo Trace is still one of the biggest names in coveted bourbon. Buffalo Trace has some fantastic bourbon bottles en route to shelves for the spring, and though they’re limited in supply, there will be something for big and modest spenders alike.

The 50 Best Whiskeys in the World

A few years ago Buffalo Trace reached out to its consumers with a clever marketing tool: a digital system that let you “craft” your own perfect recipe by choosing certain characteristics you love in bourbon, to help you arrive at the right bottle (from its portfolio) just for you. But when Buffalo Trace announced the “Craft Your Perfect Bourbon” or CYPB project in 2015, it didn’t know how popular it would be. Since then, 100,000 people have “crafted’ their perfect bottle, and in response to overwhelming numbers, Buffalo Trace took the data and, well, crafted the perfect bourbon for its fans. It turns out CYPB would appear to be Buffalo Trace’s answer to Jim Beam’s Booker’s line: a top-floor, eight-year-aged small batch bottled in limited quantities. This is limited for the “Weller” family of bourbons, which means a minuscule number of bottles overall. And since it’s the first new Weller product in some time, expect Black Friday volumes of chaos between customers once it’s on sale (for $40 for a 750 ml. bottle). Given the character—wheated recipe, high floors, modest proof point—we expect this to be a bold and flavorful bourbon with a restrained, neat-sipping strength.

Meanwhile, 61 bottles of some of the rarest and most coveted bourbon ever barreled are also going to be on the market this spring: The O.F.C. vintage bottlings are named for the O.F.C. Distillery, where they were produced in the years 1985, 1989, and 1990. Similar bottles from older vintages were released in 2016 for charity auctions, but these will be heading to (very limited) retail with suggested retail prices of $2,500 per bottle, and it’s be surprising to see a single one sold without markup. Not that it needs to sell the experience any further than that, but here’s what the brand said about presentation: “As with the initial release, each of these O.F.C. Bourbon vintages are packaged in a crystal bottle with real copper lettering in-laid in the bottle with a hand applied paper label. The label on the back of the bottle notes the milestones for the vintage year of the bottle. Each bottle will be nestled in a wooden display box containing a provenance card with the same information found on the back label.” These will be on sale this month; CYPB will be available later this season.
