Gear that has multiple uses saves money, space and time, three precious and elusive commodities. So when it was time to add a new pair of kicks to my spring repertoire, I sought out the Forsake the Maya ($114.95), the newest shoe from Forsake and one that they’re positioning as being suited to both urban and outdoor environments.

The Maya has an upper with proprietary VentureKnit nylon and a mesh lining that helps it breathe beautifully, and keep toes cool. On a hike, I found the Maya outsole to be rugged enough for more challenging trails without being over-engineered. The TPU overlay on the toe box meant extra protection, without unnecessary stitching that could cause abrasion and annoyance on a longer hike. I could feel the support from the footbed from the beginning of my hike to the end, and didn’t get the foot fatigue or knee pain that you might expect from a crossover shoe.

Photo: Courtesy of Forsake I did feel that my pair was a bit roomy – if you ever bounce between shoe sizes, I would size down on this pair. I had a merino wool sock on that was pretty minimal, but a thicker fabric could also compensate for a roomy fit if you go for your typical size. Overall, the Maya was comfortable and durable enough for all-day wear and for a moderate hike. It looks great with streetwear and stylish enough to wear to work for a day out and about. A trail shoe that blends in to daily life – exactly what I was looking for.
