Save The Redwoods League just announced that it has acquired 730 acres of land in the Redwood forest from the Richardson family for $18.1 million. The area of land is the largest old-growth redwood forest remaining in single private ownership, owned by the Richardson family for nearly 100 years. According to the press release from Save The Redwoods League, all 730 acres will be turned into a public park with trails for all to enjoy within three years. The Richardson Reserve is located less than 100 miles from San Francisco, and just a few miles inland from the Sonoma coast. “It’s as if we’ve discovered an ancient civilization; an oasis of towering redwoods hidden from public view for over a century,” said Sam Hodder, president and CEO of Save the Redwoods League. “We are grateful for the Richardson family’s foresight in stewarding this forest with such care and allowing us the opportunity to save it. The League envisions stewarding this property as a public park in the future for all to enjoy – the first new old-growth redwood park in a generation.”

Bell With trunks dating back to an estimated 1,640 years old, these are the tallest and biggest ancient redwoods on private lands in Sonoma County, rising up to roughly 300-feet tall (as tall as the Statue of Liberty) from a lush, magical forest with rich wildlife. In addition to the wildlife and the more than 1,450 ancient trees, the property also includes Haupt Creek, a fish-bearing stream and tributary of the Gualala River. The League will begin developing a public access plan, following the deal, that will likely take up to three years to complete.
