Mahershala Ali is following up his Oscar-winning performance in Moonlight with the HBO anthology series, starring as Wayne Hays, a state police detective from Northwest Arkansas who gets drawn into a creepy, long-spanning case in the Ozarks. HBO announced the official release date is January 13, 2019. The official plot for Season 3 has Hays investigating “the story of a macabre crime in the heart of the Ozarks, and a mystery that deepens over decades and plays out in three separate time periods.” The cast is filled out by Stephen Dorff (Blade), who plays Wayne’s partner Roland West, an Arkansas State Investigator; Ray Fisher (Justice League’s Cyborg) as Wayne’s son Freddy Burns; Carmen Ejogo (Alien: Covenant) as Amelia Reardon, a schoolteacher who is connected to Wayne’s case; Scoot McNairy (Killing Them Softly) as Tom, a father who gets connected to the detectives over a decade of investigating the case; and Mamie Gummer (The Newsroom) as Lucy Purcell, a mother who gets involved in a crime.

The second season, starring Rachel McAdams, Colin Farrell, and Vince Vaughn, wasn’t as well-received critically, which led to series creator Nic Pizzolatto bringing in legendary writer David Milch (Deadwood, NYPD Blue) to help out on Episode 4. What started as a routine case becomes a long journey to dissect and make sense of the crime. Written by Nic Pizzolatto; directed by Jeremy Saulnier. Season 3, Episode #2: “Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye” Debut date: SUNDAY, JAN. 13 (10:00-11:00 p.m.) Hays (Mahershala Ali) looks back at the aftermath of the 1980 Purcell case in West Finger, Ark., including possible evidence left behind at the Devil’s Den, an outdoor hangout for local kids.
